Houseplants are a lovely way of bringing a bit of nature and life into your home. It can also help to lift your mood and green is generally a calming colour.

With so many species out there, you might not know where to start. You may think you’re too busy to even look after yourself, never mind a plant. Fear not! As here are 5 foolproof plants that will definitely not die on you within two weeks, don’t require much care and attention, aren’t picky when it comes to lighting and can look oh-so lovely.

Air Plants

When you first see and touch one, you may wonder if these things are even alive. They seem so dry, they’re not even in soil or water!
Because of this, you can get creative with them. Put them in pretty glass terrariums, suspend them in hanging glass terrariums, sit them strategically on a piece of driftwood, put them on the wall, etc.

These amazing plants are special in that they don’t need to root onto anything to survive. They just need a bit of moisture, which I guess is where the name ‘Air plant’ comes from as it seems like they can literally live off of air!

To water them, you put them in a tub of water for 10 minutes, then spread them on a towel to dry.

Lucky Bamboo

You might have seen these bunched together in a shallow pot, or tall single ones with a twisted top sold in the likes of IKEA. They are a symbol of luck and prosperity, so its worth a try!

These are super easy to maintain as they don’t need soil. Just stick them in a vase of water and swap out for fresh water every week or so.

Eventually they will grow quite tall and develop many leaves and you can cut these off to propagate into new plants.

These are very hardy houseplants. Don’t require frequent watering and when you do, they only need a bit to sustain them (so water-saving too!).

There are so many types but my favourite are String of Pearls which look great from a hanging basket and Snake Plant which grow straight up. Both are super low-maintenance so if you forget about them for a while, they should still survive.

Peace Lily

The Peace Lily is a great indoor plant that not only adds lovely greenery to your space, but will also help improve your air quality too! They don’t need a lot of light, will produce pretty white flowers and will even let you know if its too thirsty as the leaves will all droop and flop over.
